The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Director for Marketing and Communications. Founded in 1867, the Illinois campus is one of the top comprehensive public research universities in the nation with an academically talented and diverse student population. The qualified individual will work closely with the Vice Chancellor to lead division-wide marketing and communications efforts to advance the mission of Student Affairs, and enhance the division branding efforts to ensure successful engagement of students, staff, parents, donors, and other key stakeholders.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the position is responsible to: •Plan and implement marketing and communication strategies to enhance Student Affairs brand, and ensure message and strategies are consistent and effective. •Advise Vice Chancellor and leadership team regarding internal and external constituency marketing and communications trends. Work with Vice Chancellor to develop written and oral communications. •Manage crisis communication to mitigate crises or controversial incidents to protect the safety of the students by providing timely and accurate information to all constituencies. •Develop concepts and write/edit copy of marketing and communications materials for a variety of platforms, including web, social media, printed materials, digital publications, video and presentations for Vice Chancellor. •Lead Student Affairs Marketing Committee to articulate Student Affairs’ desired image and position, and assure consistent communication of image and position throughout Student Affairs departments. •Measure social media analytics and reports, evaluate existing print and electronic materials, and redesign or create new materials to meet changing needs. This may include graphics, charts, informational flyers, print and digital materials, email campaigns, and web-based applications. •Serve as the contact for media inquiries and response for student crisis management, if appropriate. •Maintain close relationship and partner with campus Public Affairs Office in coordinating media outreach for major announcements and press releases.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, higher education, or related field required; master degree preferred. A minimum of seven years of relevant experience with increasing leadership in communications and/or marketing field(s) is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Qualified candidates should possess experience in overseeing design and production of printed materials, website development, and content management, and demonstrate ability in effectively managing social media to engage constituents. Prior experience in working with multiple units to lead a functional team is necessary. Ability to work with diverse groups, including students, faculty, staff, parents, and the general public is a must. Experience in communications in higher education setting is preferred. Prior experience in crisis communication is highly desirable.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package. Position Type: Regular 12-month, 100% appointment. Proposed Starting Date: As soon as possible.
