The CALS Office of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the internal and external relations efforts for the college. From covering college news to publishing our alumni magazine, CALS Marketing and Communications promotes the groundbreaking scientific discoveries and internationally renowned expertise of our faculty and staff. Other areas of responsibility for the office include the marketing of CALS programs and initiatives, overseeing the college's social media and web presence, producing events, effective media relations, promoting our new college brand guidelines and performing strategic communications leadership.
The Communications Coordinator is required to perform an essential and diverse range of communications, project management and operational/administrative duties in support of the Marketing and Communications team's mission to elevate the stature of the college and execute the team's strategic plan. The employee will assist with promoting key College initiatives and programs, respond to requests for information, gather and interpret information and maintaining our media relations section of the college website. This position is also responsible for working with team members to write news stories, assist with correspondence text on behalf of the college dean, contribute content to social media channels, and independently organize and staff mission-critical college events. This position will also be called upon to schedule and coordinate meetings, events and correspondence on behalf of the Assistant Dean and for critical team projects. The incumbent will perform general office support with an emphasis on identifying efficiencies and streamlining systems, purchase supplies using E-procurement systems and/or procurement cards, and is responsible for the submission of all departmental receipts and travel planning.
Formal training beyond a HR Diploma of one to two years, two years of college coursework or associate's degree or equivalent, more than four years or equivalent in communications, media relations, public relations or journalism as well as project management experience. Possesses outstanding customer service skills, written and verbal communications skills and can effectively represent the department and the college across a range of constituencies with autonomy. Demonstrated success in organizing and implementing complex events, such as workshops, programs and other outreach opportunities. Efficient and effective in working in a deadline-driven environment both independently and as part of a team to deliver work on schedule. Familiarity with spreadsheet software (such as Excel), word processing software (such as Word) and presentation software (such as PowerPoint). Able to anticipate challenges, obstacles, and future needs and proactively suggest options to facilitate the best delivery of services to the college community. Regularly track and evaluate metrics of success, and adapt strategies to grow and improve outreach results over time. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with utmost discretion and integrity. Ability to take a leadership role in special projects, as advised by the assistant dean. Must be able to understand and accurately apply account numbers, object codes, rules and policies to transactions and understand impact on financial statements. Ability to maintain a current and valid driver's license. Must be able to travel within New York state and elsewhere on behalf of the college with occasional evening and weekend hours required to cover college events and programs.
Knowledge of and experience in Cornell systems, including Box, Kuali and E-shop. Solid ability to speak publicly and give presentations. Experience translating scientific research into compelling storylines, including through multimedia online content, such as videos, photos and infographics. Familiarity with content editing software (such as Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro).
